Cattalou, Galyean Come Through In PCCHA Derby Open with 223
Cattlaou and Beau Galyean continued their getting to know you tour with their best effort so far Friday in Las Vegas with a final-go 223 to earn $14,863 and the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association/Core Balance Derby Open title.
The 4-year-old stallion (High Brow Cat x Louella Again x Dual Pep), owned by Curtis Chester, Weatherford, Texas, and trainer Galyean had reached several Open finals while amassing $56,340 in earnings at previous shows. This was the first time the duo competed consistently well and then peaked at just the right time.
Cattalou is the best Open horse he’s ridden since SVR Reyl Smart, the 6-year-old gelding Beau and his wife, Ashley, now co-own and share rides on, Galyean said. SVR Reyl Smart (Dual Rey x The Smart Look x Smart Little Lena) headed to the same show having earned $232,451 at the mid-point of his last limited-age season.
Cattalou and Galyean didn’t start working together until a month before late fall’s National Cutting Horse Association Futurity. That put them behind most other trainers and their top Open horses early this year, he added.
“We want to keep showing him, get him a little bit better and get him caught up with everybody’s else’s 4-year-olds,” said Galyean, Amarillo, Texas. “That’s really why we came here. He finally just find of broke through.”
